There is a job: threads that stay findable, accounts you can moderate, a public URL, and a Tuesday operator who can restore the box. Forum software in 2026 is still that product class — not a Discord channel, not a Google Form, not a WordPress comments plugin wearing a “Forum” label.

What you are actually choosing
A piece of forum software has to do four things on one domain:
- Hold conversations as topics, not as disappearing chat.
- Hold accounts with groups, bans, and a paper trail.
- Stay searchable a year later — Google, on-site search, and a human with a bookmark.
- Survive the person who installed it leaving.

Three things this roundup will not pretend:
- A ranking of 1–6. Rankings in this niche are affiliate pages. The honest output is “this job → this product.”

Free forum software is a budget constraint, not a fifth species. phpBB, MyBB, Flarum, and self-hosted Discourse all have a $0 sticker. The host, the mail, and the human who applies the next security release are not free. Open source forum software as a class gets its own later hub; here the open-source rows are in the same table as the paid ones because that is how buyers actually shop.

XenForo — the forum-first default
XenForo is a community forum platform. Official 2.3 manuals do not describe a split suite. Threads and posts are the primary content. Everything public sits in one node tree. The four stock node types are categories (containers only), forums (threads and last-post metadata), link/redirect nodes, and Pages.
Those Pages are static HTML inside the node tree, compiled with template syntax. They are not a multi-author CMS. Official extras around the core are sold separately: Media Gallery (XFMG), Resource Manager (XFRM), and Enhanced Search (XFES, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch). Paid access is user upgrades — a payment profile adds the member to a secondary group. A first-party store, clubs, blogs, and a front-end app switcher are not in the official manual.
That is the whole contrast with Invision Community. If “threads plus a style plus groups” is the site, XenForo is the default paid PHP answer in 2026. If that sentence felt incomplete, skip to IPS.
Self-hosted license (xenforo.com/purchase, ex VAT): $195 for lifetime use of that license and 12 months of support and updates. After the year, a $60 extension keeps support and updates current. The license still runs if you let support lapse; you stop getting official updates. First-party add-ons add their own sticker and their own extension line (XFES $60, XFRM $70, XFMG $70). Branding removal is $350. One license per installation.
XenForo Cloud is the other SKU: fully managed, complete suite including Enhanced Search, daily backups, DDoS, SSL, no SSH. Starter $60/mo ($54 billed annual), Standard $100/mo ($90 annual), Business $250/mo ($225 annual). Page-view and storage caps apply. Third-party add-ons and styles upload through the ACP; some add-ons are inspected before they go live.
Requirements for self-host: PHP 7.2 minimum. The purchase page recommends 8.3; developer docs recommend 8.4. MySQL 5.7+ (MariaDB and Percona are fine). That is a normal PHP VPS, not a Docker RAM conversation.
Community practice on XenForo is specific. Keep Registered as every account’s primary group and layer staff or paid access as secondary groups. Treat permission Never as a hard override, not a casual “no.” Prefer a broad node tree plus thread prefixes over 80 nested boards — permission cache rebuilds scale with groups × nodes, and a medium board can lock tables for minutes on a change. Put CSS in extra.less, not in core templates. Do not delete add-on files over SFTP before the ACP uninstall. Test upgrades on staging.
Pick XenForo when the Tuesday operator already speaks PHP, members expect a forum list, and you will still want that style in 2029. Do not pick it to “get IPS features cheaper.” You will buy three official add-ons and a pile of third-party ones and still not have Commerce.

Invision Community — when the forum is one room
Invision Community is a commercial PHP/MySQL suite. Forums are an application inside it. So are Events, Downloads, Gallery, Blogs, Clubs, Commerce, and (plan-gated) Pages and Courses. Members, groups, notifications, and search are shared. That is the purchase. Search still says invision community forums because that is the famous room. The trap is buying the building when you needed the room.
Current line is IC5 (5.0.0 shipped February 2025). IC4 support ends 31 December 2026. If you are still on four, the deadline is a calendar fact, not marketing.

Creator already includes forums, events, downloads, galleries, blogs, clubs, and monetization. Pages full access and Courses start at Creator Plus. Storage and monthly member-view caps scale with the plan (Creator: 50 GB / 0.5M views).
Classic is still the on-premises SKU: $499 once, then $199/year for updates, on infrastructure you run. It is not the homepage story. Confirm it is still offered on invisioncommunity.com/buy/pricing before you budget a self-host.
Pick IPS when the site is honestly several apps with one login. Skip it when you wanted XenForo plus a gallery. The longer “who it is for” write-up is the IPS 2026 hub.
Discourse — Latest, trust levels, Docker
Discourse is a discussion platform, not a PHP board with a new coat of paint. Official architecture is a Rails backend serving JSON to an Ember single-page front end, PostgreSQL for data, Redis for realtime and queues. Production install is Docker. Bypassing Docker is unsupported.
The homepage is Latest, not a forum index. Each topic lives in one category and can carry several tags. Deep category trees are discouraged. Tags are topic-level; you cannot tag a single post.
New users are sandboxed by trust levels (TL0–TL4). TL0 is rate-limited (images, links, mentions, likes, chat). TL1–TL3 promote on activity; TL3 can drop back to TL2 if engagement falls. TL4 is a staff-side grant. Flagged content lands in a review queue. Staff can silence (no new public content) or suspend (no login). Native Chat is tied to those same trust levels.
Self-host requirements from the official cloud-server guide: 64-bit Linux (Ubuntu LTS preferred), 1 GB RAM with swap minimum / 2 GB+ recommended, 1 core / 2+ recommended, 10 GB disk / 20 GB+ recommended. Ports 80 and 443 must be free. Rebuilds (./launcher rebuild app) take the site down for several minutes. SMTP is optional at install if you use Discourse ID social login; you will still want mail later for digests.
Official hosted (discourse.org/pricing, USD): a Free plan exists, then Pro $100/month and Business $500/month, Enterprise custom. Hosted skips the Docker person. Self-host is GPLv2 and $0 software. Neither path is “the same $6 VPS as phpBB.”
Themes and theme components change the front end without a rebuild. Plugins change the Rails side and do need a rebuild. Do not treat those as the same lever.
Pick Discourse when the community is a support or product discussion stream, you like automated trust, and you will either pay CDCK or hire someone who can SSH into a container host. Flarum — small, modern, still PHP
Flarum is the lightweight modern PHP answer. Backend is PHP (Laravel components, Composer). Front end is a Mithril SPA talking JSON:API. Core is deliberately thin: likes, tags, mentions, flags, and a lot of what XenForo ships in core arrive as extensions.
1.x requirements (docs.flarum.org): Apache with mod_rewrite or Nginx; PHP 7.3+; MySQL 5.6+/8.0.23+ or MariaDB 10.0.5+; Composer if you manage extensions from the CLI. Shared PHP hosting is possible. Official 1.x archives at the docs snapshot for this article are 1.8.17, with PHP 8.3 recommended as the quiet 1.x path. 1.x runs on newer PHP but logs deprecation notices from an older framework — expected, not a mystery.
1.x is on life support (critical and security fixes). 2.0 is in release-candidate; people run it, the API is frozen, it is not the conservative production default unless you are quoting the RC docs on purpose. Plan the 1.x → 2.x upgrade; do not start a new 1.x board in late 2026 without that plan.
The Extension Manager can install any Composer package. Official docs are blunt: only install it if you trust every admin. That is a supply-chain decision, not a XenForo ACP zip.
Importers exist as unofficial community scripts (phpBB, MyBB, FluxBB, SMF2). There is no official first-party importer set. Do not bet a 50,000-user migration on them without a staging run.
Pick Flarum when the honest brief is small, modern, PHP, and you accept a thinner catalogue. It is not a XenForo replacement for an add-on-heavy board and not a Discourse replacement for official hosted. The longer “when” is Flarum as a lightweight modern forum.
phpBB — the $0 classic that is still maintained
phpBB is GPLv2. Latest stable cited here is 3.3.17 (“Young Bertie”), 6 June 2026 — a maintenance and security release of a feature-frozen 3.3 line. phpBB 4.0 is alpha (4.0.0-a2 in April 2026, PHP 8.2 minimum, Symfony 7.4). Do not put 4 on a production board and call it 2026-stable.
Requirements for 3.3: PHP 7.2.0+, with later 3.3.x point releases documenting support up through modern 8.x. MySQL 4.1.3+ (MySQLi), MariaDB 5.1+, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MS SQL, or Oracle. json, mbstring, XML; getimagesize() enabled. That floor is why phpBB still fits cheap PHP hosting. It is also why a 2026 greenfield brand often looks dated next to XenForo or Flarum unless you invest in a style and a short, trusted extension list.
There is no license invoice and no official hosted product. Cost is hosting, SMTP, and the hours you spend applying 3.3.x security releases. The Customisation Database is real; so is the long tail of abandoned extensions. Treat “free” as “you are the vendor.”
Pick phpBB when you already run it, the members know it, and the budget is genuinely $0 software. Pick it as a bridge if you will import phpBB 3.2–3.3 into XenForo later — XenForo’s official importer covers that range. Do not pick it in 2026 as a fashion statement. MyBB — the other $0 PHP board
MyBB is free, LGPL, PHP, and still shipping. Latest 1.8 release cited here is 1.8.40, 28 May 2026 (security and maintenance). Series before 1.8 are unsupported.
Documented 1.8 floor is old on purpose: PHP ≥ 5.2; MariaDB ≥ 5.1, MySQL ≥ 5.0, PostgreSQL ≥ 8.1, or SQLite ≥ 3; Apache, nginx, lighttpd, or IIS; SimpleXML, mbstring, gd, plus the database extension. Recommendations are “latest PHP and latest MySQL/MariaDB.” Give a host PHP 8 and current MySQL anyway. The published minimum is not a target.
MyBB’s Merge System is the historical reason people still land here: converting into MyBB from other boards. XenForo community notes on the other direction are specific — MyBB stores a title per post; XenForo stores a title per thread; MyBB PMs are folder-based, XenForo uses Conversations as private threads. If you are leaving MyBB for XenForo, that mapping is the work, not a zip swap.
Pick MyBB when you already have it, or when a small community wants a $0 PHP installer and is willing to live on 1.8.x until a 2.x actually ships as stable. Skip it as a 2026 greenfield default if you can pay $195 or you wanted a modern SPA. It is in this table because searchers still shortlist it next to phpBB. It is not in this table as “the sleeper XenForo killer.”
Free versus paid (without lying about TCO)
Free forum software in 2026 means one of four honest landings:

Do not compare month-one stickers across those rows. A $0 phpBB on a dying shared host plus a founder who wants out is more expensive than a XenForo license the same founder will still open in 2028. A Discourse Business hosted plan is more expensive than XenForo plus a modest VPS unless you were going to hire a Docker person you do not have. The arithmetic lives in the cost comparison. Open source is GPLv2 (phpBB, Discourse), MIT (Flarum), LGPL (MyBB). Open source is not “no one is in charge.” Discourse’s official path is still Docker. phpBB’s 3.3 line is feature-frozen. Flarum 1.x is winding down. Read the license and the support posture.

- Small, modern, PHP, $0 software, you accept a thin core. Flarum. Budget the 2.0 move.
- Already on phpBB, $0, members will not relearn a UI this year. Stay on 3.3.17. Put phpBB 4 in a lab.
- Already on MyBB 1.8. Stay current (1.8.40+). Greenfield MyBB only if you have a Merge System reason.

Is there good free forum software?
Yes. phpBB, MyBB, Flarum, and self-hosted Discourse are legitimate. “Free” means the software license. Hosting, email, backups, and the next security release are on you. Discourse’s official hosted Free plan is a capped cloud SKU, not a self-host substitute.
Is open source forum software “good enough” now?

Can I run forum software on cheap shared hosting?
